What is composite bonding for teeth?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment in which tooth-coloured resin is applied directly to a tooth, shaped by hand, hardened with a curing light and polished. It fixes small chips, gaps, uneven edges and minor discolouration, usually in one visit. At Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic, enamel removal is kept minimal and the dentist confirms suitability after examination.

What composite bonding can fix

Bonding is best for small, local problems on otherwise healthy teeth. The resin is added to the tooth, so in most cases little or no enamel needs to be removed. Only the surface is lightly roughened so the resin can grip.

Because the dentist sculpts the resin directly in your mouth, shape and length can be adjusted during the same appointment. This makes bonding a practical, reversible first step for patients who are not ready for porcelain veneers.

  • Chipped or fractured front-tooth edges
  • Small gaps (diastema) between front teeth
  • Uneven, worn or slightly short teeth
  • Small areas of discolouration or white spots
  • Minor shape differences between neighbouring teeth

Bonding vs veneers: an honest comparison

Composite resin is less stain-resistant and less strong than ceramic. It can pick up colour from coffee, tea and red wine over time and may chip if you bite hard objects. Polishing and small repairs are simple, but bonding usually needs more upkeep than porcelain.

If many teeth need changing, or if the colour of the whole smile is the main concern, ceramic no-prep veneers or whitening may give a longer-lasting result. Whitening, if wanted, should be done first, because composite does not change colour with bleaching.

Planning bonding so it looks natural

The shade is chosen with natural daylight and photos, and layered resins can mimic the translucent edge of a natural tooth. When several front teeth are involved, a Digital Smile Design plan helps set the right length and proportions before any resin is added.

Your bite is checked after shaping. Bonding on the edge of a front tooth must not take heavy contact when you close or grind, or it is more likely to chip. Patients who grind at night may be advised to wear a night guard.

How it works at Oneday Dental

  1. Before visit

    Send a photo on WhatsApp

Send a clear photo of your smile and the tooth or teeth that concern you. The dentist tells you if bonding is likely to suit.

  2. Visit

    Examination and shade match

Teeth and gums are checked for decay or gum disease, and the resin shade is matched to your natural teeth.

  3. Visit

    Surface preparation

The tooth is cleaned and lightly roughened, and a bonding agent is applied. Drilling is rarely needed.

  4. Visit

    Shaping and curing

Resin is added in layers, shaped by hand and hardened with a curing light.

  5. Same day

    Polish and bite check

The surface is polished to a natural shine and your bite is checked so the bonded edge is protected.

Things to know before you decide

  • Composite can stain and may chip, especially on biting edges; small repairs or re-polishing are normal over the years.
  • Large gaps, crowded teeth or a deep bite are usually better treated with orthodontics or ceramic restorations.
  • Teeth with active decay or gum disease need treatment before cosmetic bonding.
  • Heavy night grinding shortens the life of bonding unless a night guard is worn.

FAQ

Composite Bonding: common questions

Does composite bonding damage my teeth?
Bonding is one of the most conservative cosmetic options. The surface is roughened and conditioned, but healthy enamel is usually kept, so in many cases the bonding can be removed or replaced later. The dentist confirms at examination whether any shaping is needed for your teeth.
How long does composite bonding last?
With good care, bonding typically lasts about 4 to 8 years before it needs repair or replacement. Lifespan depends on where it is placed, how you bite, and habits such as nail biting, grinding or drinking a lot of coffee and red wine. Regular polishing helps keep it looking fresh.
Can composite bonding be done in one day?
Yes, in most cases. Shade matching, shaping, curing and polishing are typically completed in a single appointment of about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. This makes bonding practical for visitors staying only a few days in Seoul.
Can I whiten bonded teeth?
No. Whitening gel lightens natural enamel but does not change the colour of composite resin. If you want whiter teeth, whiten first and wait about two weeks for the colour to settle, then have the bonding matched to your new shade.
Is bonding or veneers better for me?
Bonding suits small, local fixes such as one chipped edge or a small gap. Veneers suit patients who want to change the shape and colour of several teeth with a more stain-resistant, longer-lasting material. The dentist explains both options after seeing your teeth and bite.
How much does composite bonding cost in Seoul?
The cost depends on the number of teeth, the amount of resin and the complexity of shaping. Send a photo of your smile on WhatsApp and the dentist will give an estimate, which is confirmed after examination at the clinic in Gangnam.
