How is an overbite treated?

An overbite, or deep bite, is usually treated with orthodontics that raises the bite by moving front teeth vertically and levelling the curve of the teeth. Fixed braces suit most cases; aligners suit selected mild to moderate ones, and skeletal cases may need jaw surgery. At Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic, Dr. Kim Do-hoon leads treatment, typically lasting 12 to 30 months.

What counts as an overbite

Overbite is the vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower ones. A small overlap of about 2 to 3 mm is normal. When the upper teeth cover much of the lower teeth, or the lower teeth bite into the gum behind the upper teeth, it is called a deep bite.

People often confuse overbite with overjet, which is how far the upper teeth stick forward horizontally. Forward-flared teeth are covered on our buck teeth page.

  • Lower teeth hidden when you bite together
  • Lower front teeth touching the gum behind the upper teeth
  • Wear on lower front teeth or upper front tooth edges
  • Jaw discomfort in some patients

Treatment options

Most deep bites are corrected with fixed appliances such as metal braces or self-ligating brackets, which give control over vertical movement. Selected mild to moderate cases can be treated with Invisalign or other aligners.

When the cause is a jaw size mismatch, especially in adults, orthodontics may be combined with jaw surgery. Dr. Kim Do-hoon plans surgical orthodontics for these cases.

Why treat a deep bite

A deep bite can wear the front teeth, irritate the gum behind the upper teeth and make future crowns or veneers harder to place. Correcting it can make the bite more stable and the front teeth easier to restore later.

Because Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic also has occlusion-focused care, including T-Scan digital bite analysis, bite concerns can be reviewed across departments where relevant.

Things to know before you decide

  • Deep bites have a known tendency to relapse; retainer wear is important.
  • Skeletal deep bites in adults may not be fully correctable without surgery.
  • Aligners may not achieve enough vertical change in severe cases.
  • Tenderness after adjustments and hygiene demands of fixed braces.
  • Active gum disease must be treated first.

FAQ

Overbite Treatment: common questions

What is the difference between overbite and overjet?
Overbite is vertical overlap: how far the upper front teeth cover the lower ones. Overjet is horizontal: how far the upper teeth stick forward. Many people have both. Treatment is planned around which one, or both, needs correcting.
Can an adult overbite be fixed without surgery?
Many can. If the problem is mainly tooth position, braces or aligners can correct it. If the jaws themselves are mismatched, orthodontics alone may improve but not fully correct it, and surgery may be discussed. X-rays determine which applies.
Can Invisalign fix an overbite?
Selected mild to moderate overbites can be corrected with aligners, sometimes with elastics or bite ramps built into the trays. Severe deep bites usually respond more predictably to fixed braces. The orthodontist advises after examination.
How long does overbite correction take?
Typically 12 to 30 months, depending on severity and appliance. Surgical cases include orthodontic preparation before and finishing after surgery, so they often take longer. The orthodontist gives your estimate after diagnosis, and retainers are needed afterwards.
How much does overbite treatment cost in Seoul?
It depends on severity, appliance, treatment length and whether surgery is involved. We give an initial estimate after reviewing photos and X-rays on WhatsApp, and confirm it after the in-person examination. Surgical cases involve additional surgical costs, explained separately in the plan.
