How do you fix protruding front teeth?

Protruding front teeth are usually fixed with orthodontic retraction: creating space, often by removing premolars, then pulling the front teeth back with braces or selected aligners. This can also reduce lip protrusion. Jaw-related cases may need surgical orthodontics. At Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic, Dr. Kim Do-hoon leads protrusion correction, typically taking 18 to 30 months.

Protrusion vs buck teeth

Protrusion often involves more than one or two teeth. In bimaxillary protrusion, both upper and lower front teeth tilt forward, pushing the lips out and making it hard to close the lips without strain. This is common in East Asian patients and is a frequent reason adults seek orthodontics in Korea.

If only the upper front teeth stick out past the lower ones, the problem is usually increased overjet, explained on our buck teeth treatment page.

  • Lips that look full or pushed forward at rest
  • Strain in the chin muscle when closing the lips
  • Front teeth tilted forward on side-view photos
  • Crowding together with forward-tilted teeth

How protrusion correction works

To move front teeth back, the orthodontist needs space. Most protrusion cases create it by removing four premolars, then retracting the front teeth into that space with fixed braces such as metal braces or Clippy-C braces. Mini-screws may be used as temporary anchorage for larger movements.

Where the jaws themselves are forward, Dr. Kim Do-hoon may discuss surgical orthodontics. The decision is based on side-view X-ray measurements, not appearance alone.

Planning the profile, not just the teeth

Moving front teeth back usually lets the lips sit further back as well, but how much varies with lip thickness and age. Over-retraction can flatten the profile, so the amount is planned carefully from measurements and photos.

If you are also considering cosmetic work on the front teeth, align the teeth first. For an overview of all options, see orthodontics in Seoul.

FAQ

Protrusion Correction: common questions

Will fixing protruding teeth change my face?
Often the lips sit further back after front teeth are retracted, which can soften a protruding mouth. The amount varies with lip thickness, age and how far the teeth move. The orthodontist explains the expected change from your X-rays and photos.
Do I need teeth removed for protrusion correction?
Many moderate to marked cases need four premolars removed to create space. Mild cases with existing gaps may not. The decision comes from measurements of tooth angle, crowding and lip position. The extraction spaces close completely during treatment.
Can clear aligners fix protruding teeth?
Mild protrusion can sometimes be improved with aligners. Large retraction, especially with extractions, is usually more predictable with fixed braces and sometimes mini-screws. Dr. Kim Do-hoon advises which suits your case after reviewing your X-rays.
Is surgery needed for protruding teeth?
Usually not. Surgery is considered only when the jaws themselves are positioned forward and tooth movement alone cannot achieve a balanced result. Side-view X-rays show whether the cause is mainly teeth or jaws, and the options are explained before you decide.
How much does protrusion correction cost in Seoul?
Cost depends on whether extractions, mini-screws or surgery are involved, and on treatment length. Treatment costs are set after a full orthodontic examination. Send photos and any X-rays on WhatsApp for an initial estimate before your visit.
