What type of mouth guard do I need?

It depends on the purpose. A night guard (occlusal splint) protects teeth from grinding and clenching during sleep, while a sports guard is thicker and softer to absorb impact. Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic makes both from a digital scan of your teeth, and checks the bite on a night guard with T-Scan so contacts meet evenly. Fitting usually takes 2 visits.

Night guard vs sports guard

A night guard is usually a thin, hard or dual-layer acrylic splint covering the upper or lower teeth. It is designed so the opposing teeth glide smoothly across it, which spreads grinding force and stops enamel wear. It is the standard protection for people with teeth grinding.

A sports guard is thicker and made of a softer material that absorbs and spreads the force of a blow. It protects front teeth, lips and the jaw during contact sports and is not designed for nightly grinding.

Why a custom guard rather than a store-bought one

Boil-and-bite and stock guards are inexpensive but often bulky, loose or uneven. An uneven guard can leave some teeth taking all the force, and some people clench more on soft, ill-fitting guards.

A custom guard is designed from a digital intraoral scan, so it fits closely and stays in place without biting to hold it. For night guards, the clinic records contacts with T-Scan Novus during fitting and adjusts the surface so force is shared evenly. This matters especially if you have implants, crowns or veneers, which can chip or overload under grinding.

  • Fits your teeth precisely and stays in without effort
  • Thinner and easier to speak and sleep with
  • Bite balanced on the guard surface
  • Can be adjusted at review visits

Caring for your mouth guard

Rinse the guard after use, brush it gently with a soft brush and cool water, and let it dry in a ventilated case. Avoid hot water, which can warp it, and keep it away from pets.

Bring it to your regular check-up so the dentist can see wear patterns. Deep grooves or cracks mean it is time to replace it. If you wear a guard and still wake with jaw pain or loud snoring, mention it; a sleep or jaw-joint assessment may be needed.

Things to know before you decide

  • A night guard protects teeth but does not stop grinding itself; symptoms can return if it is not worn.
  • People with loud snoring or suspected sleep apnea should be assessed before using a standard night guard.
  • Children and teens with changing teeth or braces need guards remade more often.
  • A guard that feels tight, rocks or causes jaw pain should be adjusted rather than forced in.

FAQ

Custom Mouth Guards: common questions

How long does it take to get a custom mouth guard in Seoul?
Usually two visits: one for the examination and scan, and one for fitting and bite adjustment. The time between depends on lab scheduling. If you are visiting Korea, send your travel dates on WhatsApp so the visits can be planned within your stay.
Should a night guard go on the upper or lower teeth?
Both can work. Upper guards are common because they are stable and cover more teeth; lower guards can be easier to speak with and less noticeable. The dentist chooses based on your bite, missing teeth, existing restorations and comfort.
Can I use a sports guard at night for grinding?
It is not recommended. Sports guards are thick and soft to absorb impacts, and some people chew or clench more on soft material during sleep. A night guard is designed with a smooth, balanced surface for grinding.
How much does a custom mouth guard cost in Seoul?
The cost depends on the type of guard, the material, how it is made and whether bite analysis is included. Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic gives an estimate on WhatsApp after you describe what you need, and confirms it after the examination.
How do I know when to replace my mouth guard?
Replace it if it cracks, has deep wear grooves or holes, no longer fits snugly, or smells even after cleaning. Many night guards last 2–5 years. Sports guards for children usually need replacing more often as teeth grow and change.
