Dental Cleaning in Seoul (Scaling and Polishing)

What happens during a dental cleaning?
A dental cleaning, also called scaling and polishing, removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and just below the gumline, then polishes the teeth to remove surface stains. At Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic it usually takes 30–60 minutes in one visit and includes a gum check, so early gum disease can be found before it causes bone loss.

What a professional cleaning removes
Plaque is a soft bacterial film that brushing removes. Within days, plaque left at the gumline starts to harden into tartar (calculus), which bonds to the tooth and can only be removed with professional instruments.
Tartar keeps bacteria against the gums and is the main driver of gum bleeding and bad breath. Left for years, it can push gingivitis into periodontitis. Our clinic video on untreated tartar explains this in more detail.
- Ultrasonic scaling to break up tartar
- Hand instruments for fine areas between teeth
- Polishing to remove coffee, tea and smoking stains
- Gum check and advice on brushing, floss and interdental brushes
Cleaning vs deep cleaning: which do you need?
A routine cleaning treats tartar above and just below the gumline in healthy or mildly inflamed gums. If the dentist finds pockets of about 4 mm or deeper with bone loss on X-rays, you need scaling and root planing(deep cleaning) instead, which is done under local anaesthetic over several visits.
Deep cleaning and ongoing gum care are covered on our periodontics page. If inflammation persists, laser-assisted gum treatment may be added.

A cleaning is usually the first step before cosmetic or restorative work. Teeth whitening works more evenly on clean enamel, and veneers or crowns need healthy, non-bleeding gumlines for accurate impressions or scans.
If you are visiting Seoul for other treatment, ask on WhatsApp to add a cleaning to your first appointment.

Korean audioThings to know before you decide
- Teeth can feel sensitive to cold for a day or two, especially where tartar covered exposed roots.
- Gums may bleed slightly during and after cleaning if they are inflamed.
- A routine cleaning will not fix periodontitis; deeper pockets need deep cleaning.
- Polishing removes surface stains only; deeper discolouration needs whitening or restorations.
