Should I have my wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth are usually removed when they cause repeated gum infection, decay, pain or damage to the neighbouring molar, or when they are impacted in a position that cannot be cleaned. At Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic the decision is made from an examination and 3D CT. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that you can clean often do not need removal.

Why impacted wisdom teeth need a 3D plan
Lower wisdom teeth often grow at an angle and stay partly under the gum or bone. Their roots can sit close to the inferior alveolar nerve, which gives feeling to the lower lip and chin. A flat X-ray cannot always show how close they are, so the clinic uses 3D CT to see root shape and nerve position before deciding on the approach.
Upper wisdom teeth are usually simpler but can sit near the sinus. The scan helps the surgeon plan for both. If you are planning orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist and surgeon can review the same scan.
- Recurring swelling or infection around a half-erupted tooth (pericoronitis)
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or the molar in front of it
- Food trapping that cannot be cleaned
- A cyst or bone damage seen on imaging
- Planned removal before or during orthodontic treatment, if the orthodontist advises it
Who carries out the surgery
Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic has an oral and maxillofacial surgery department within its team of 13 dentists: Dr. Eom In-woong, Dr. Noh Kyu-sik and Dr. Oh Tae-kyung. Impacted and deeply positioned wisdom teeth are handled by this team.
If a wisdom tooth is erupted and straightforward, it is often removed in the same way as any routine tooth extraction. Patients who are anxious can ask about options on the sedation dentistry page; suitability is decided at consultation.

Many patients remove the two wisdom teeth on one side in one visit, so they can still chew on the other side. Removing all four at once is possible when they are simple, but means more swelling and a softer diet for longer.
If you are visiting Korea for a short stay, send your panoramic X-ray on WhatsApp first. The team can tell you how many visits to plan and whether a check visit is needed before you fly.

Things to know before you decide
- Temporary numbness of the lip, chin or tongue can occur after lower impacted wisdom teeth; it usually resolves, and permanent change is rare.
- Dry socket occurs more often after lower wisdom teeth and in smokers; it is treatable but painful.
- Swelling, bruising and limited mouth opening for several days are normal after surgical removal.
- Removal is often not recommended for healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that you can clean well.
- Older patients and those with certain medical conditions may heal more slowly; tell the dentist about medications.
