Which type of teeth whitening is right for me?
In-office whitening suits people who want a visible change in about 1 to 1.5 hours, such as short-stay visitors. Take-home trays work more gradually over 1 to 2 weeks and are easier to top up. A combination gives the strongest, most stable result. At Gangnam One Day Dental Clinic, the dentist recommends a method after checking your teeth, gums and existing restorations.

Three ways to whiten your teeth
In-office whitening uses a stronger whitening gel applied by the dental team, with the gums protected, for the fastest change. See Zoom whitening in Seoul for what happens during a light-activated chair-side session.
Take-home whitening uses custom trays made from a scan or impression of your teeth and a lower-strength gel worn at home. It is slower but gentle, and the trays can be reused for top-ups. Combination whitening starts with one in-office session and continues with trays to deepen and stabilise the shade.
- In-office: fastest, one appointment
- Take-home: gradual, flexible, reusable trays
- Combination: strongest and longest-lasting result
- Maintenance: short top-ups every few months as needed
Who whitening works for, and who it does not
Whitening works best on yellowish or light-brown staining of natural enamel caused by drinks, food, smoking and ageing. Grey or very deep intrinsic stains, such as tetracycline staining, respond less predictably and may need ceramic veneers instead.
Whitening gel does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings or composite bonding. If you have restorations on your front teeth, they may look darker after whitening and need replacing to match. Your dentist checks this before you start, not after.

If you are planning new restorations, whiten first. The target shade becomes the reference for veneers, crowns or composite bonding, which are colour-matched about two weeks after whitening, once the shade has settled.
Before whitening, the dentist checks for cavities, cracked teeth, exposed roots and gum inflammation, because these can make whitening uncomfortable. A professional cleaning before whitening removes surface tartar so the gel reaches the enamel evenly.

Things to know before you decide
- Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are common for 1-2 days, especially after in-office whitening.
- Crowns, veneers, fillings and bonding do not whiten and may need replacing to match.
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with untreated cavities or gum disease.
- Results vary by tooth type; grey or very deep stains may lighten only slightly.
